The Medway Supported Internships team was invited to You Can!, a cafe style speed networking event for disabled students at Canterbury Christ Church University. The event was designed to give students the opportunity to speak to employers and discuss topics around disclosure, reasonable adjustments, and access to work.
Lots of people were not aware of Access to Work support, and so the event was an opportunity to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of disclosure in order to get the right support from employers.
"It was useful to hear peoples experiences of mental health as it will help me better support people with a mental health diagnosis" - Steve Chapman,
One of the successes of the event was the effective peer support in the room. People shared both good and bad experiences of how they have been treated and supported within employement. The overall message was one of positivity in that there are open-minded, supportive employers out there.
