It was the launch event at Lily's Bistro on Saturday 15th July. The new cafe's strapline is "Bringing People Together" and aims to be inclusive of all dietry requirements and choices, whilst also offering a range of workshops and activities for the community to enjoy. The cafe owners, Keira and Zoe, extend this approach to the cafe workforce and have been working with Skillnet through our Support Internships programme. Stephanie Hunt, a student and intern in the project, begins working with Lily's Bistro from October.
Stephanie first became aware of Skillnet through a school work experience placement at The Pulse Cafe. Stephanie then joined Swale Supported Internship programme by referral from Canterbury College in September 2016.
Louise and Helena attended the launch event on 15th July. It was great to see Stephanie settling in with the team during a brief quiet period at the launch party! Pictured from left to right are Keira, Helena, Wendy, Stephanie, Poppie and Angie.
It was an unexpected surprise to bump into Poppy Collie, who is part of our music group in Canterbury. Poppy is also a member of Aartvark, a group working with art as a form of therapy and education. Lily's Cafe is exhibiting work from artists within Aartvark and Poppy's work is on display. Poppy kindly took the time to tell us about her art.
"I draw the images from photographs that I have taken in Pluckly and Smarden. I use watercolours. I get support at Aartvark to think of different techniques and ways of working - they worked with me to come up with ideas for the outlines. They don't tell me what to do."
All of the artwork is for sale in the cafe. The money from the artwork goes to Aartvark to fund materials and equipment for the group. Poppy has exhibited her work several times before.
"I have another exhibition coming up next year in Stubb's Cross. We still need to confirm the details, but I am planning to also bake cakes for the event. My paintings usually sell quite fast - last year I sold a painting called Three Houses. The prices are usually between £35 and £55."
